TRÈBES, France—A gunman killed four people Friday in a terrorist attack that tore through roadways and a supermarket, including a gendarme who traded places with a hostage.
“In giving his life to end the murderous escapade of a jihadist terrorist, he fell as a hero,” French President Emmanuel Macron said in a statement on Saturday morning. “At the heart of the action, Lt. Col. Beltrame showed exceptional composure and illustrated his extraordinary military virtues,” Mr. Macron said. “He deserves the respect and admiration of the entire nation.”
